Teenagers and career choices
Many young people today are overwhelmed with choosing the right occupation. The wide range of occupations that exist and a flood of information about these occupations can make it difficult for young people to make an informed decision in order to choose a suitable education or occupation.
A study shows that in 2017 42% of young people did not feel sufficiently informed about choosing a suitable career. Choosing a suitable career is an important part of growing up and determines the future of the young people.
On the other hand, companies are also facing difficulties in finding qualified trainees. Another study shows that in 2015 15.7% of apprenticeships in Austria were dropped prematurely. Our finding suggests that, apart from the personal losses of the young people, this situation creates financial disadvantages for the companies and for the government. Therefore, our study suggests that, a new type of career guidance and information needs to be developed.
