We already know that apps can do a variety of things – education or entertainment are only two in a million options. Now, an Austrian computer scientist has come up with an idea for an app that actually save lifes. But how is that possible? We talked to Werner Richtsfeld, the CEO of the app.

Would you like to tell us something about you?

My name is Werner, I am 30 years old and I live in Upper Austria. I am the CEO of a company called BikerSOS, that is located in Linz.

What is BikerSOS?

We created a mobile applciation which is able to detect motor cycle accidents and automatically set of an emergency alert in case of an accident.

It only works for motorcycles?

There already is an solution for cars, the so called E-Call-System.

How does your app work?

If you start the application, it records your trips and you can send live tracking links to your friends.

You can choose private contacts and they receive a message with a link to the location where the driver is. Then the private contact knows that something is wrong and can contact emergency services in the area. In the premium version, the alert is going directly to the emergency call center.

How did you get the idea?

I am a biker myself and a friend of mine planned to go to Italy by bike but his girlfriend said no, you’re not allowed to go to Italy because if something happens nobody will find you.

What are your plans for the future?

At the moment, we are implementing a wrong driver detection system. So if you go on the highway in the wrong direction, all the other people on the highway would get an alert and could react properly.

How many accidents have been tracked with the help of this app?

Around five to ten. The biggest crash so far was in Slovenia. They called the helicopter that flew him to a hospital in Graz, where he then got surgery.

How many people are using your app?

Currently we have around 50 000 downloads, but we have no exact number of daily users. The main group of users is located in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. But we are currently expanding to Italy, we’re doing a lot of marketing in Italy, Spain and France.
